You're (BE)A(U)TIFUL
I stare at the body of the reflection facing back at me.
The body that's not accepted by society, because if you don't have an hourglass shape.
You're not beautifully made.
"Your stomach is not flat enough" I hear a whisper say.
"Your thighs need to be wider, boobs bigger" It gets louder.
"Butt rounder, waist skinnier!" It escalates. Till I'm lying on the ground, questioning whether "I'm beautiful";
and I know it's not just me.
There are millions of girls crying themselves to sleep
Because society made us believe, "We're not beautiful".
Starving ourselves. Forcibly eating more. And if you do have this hourglass shape figure, do not show it off
Or you're then classified a whore.
There's no end, but I'm putting this to an end!
YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL!
Your size does not determine that.
Thick or thin,skinny or fat.
You're beautiful!
Don't let this world put you down.
You're beautiful, get up Queen and embrace that crown.
About this poem
This poem is about the unrealistic body standards that are set for women. As a teenage girl in this generation myself I understand the pressure it holds to look a certain way. As a young girl I was always told to watch my weight and that never sat right with me however my fragile self walked into the trap and gained an eating disorder that thankfully I'm recovering from . This poem really emphasizes the torture women go through trying to reach these unrealistic body standards that are shown in magazines and TV shows. It also sends out the message that you are beautiful being you no matter the size of your clothing. more »
