Analysis of S.A.D.
Chad Jason Mast 1974 (Portland, Oregon)
Is this what it’s like,
This elongated descent
Into Madness?
A slow fracturing
Of the psyche,
Like fragile ice cracking
Under weight as it thins
Giving way to the icy depths
Beneath.
I long for peace.
I’m tired of this rollercoaster
With its ups and downs and twists.
For some, autumn’s changes
Bring joy;
The cooler weather,
The colorization of the leaves.
But for me
It’s like watching a loved one
Slowly die
And I mourn the loss of
Warmth,
Green.
My mind doesn’t console me either.
Instead, it plays games,
Chastising,
Reminding me that this too
Will be another long, cold winter.
