I Stand Alone in the Dark
I Stand Alone in the Dark
By Art Hyde
I stare into the midnight sky,
the moon ablaze with gold and orange.
The brightest stars perform their dance,
while others lend their praise.
My mind amused by all above,
intertwined with enormous expectation.
The utter size of all I see,
our God’s sublime creation.
Why this serge of fervor?
Ominous to say the least.
I stand alone and ponder,
far below his cosmos sea.
My breath gives haze, the air above,
outside my body weak,
a search for peace instead of pain,
this I surely seek.
A broken spirit falls like stars,
taunting next my feet.
The heavens, and all its glory,
smiling down at me.
In the pitch-black dark the shaded flowers,
remind of earth’s own majesty.
But, oh so small in-scale are these,
asleep the waiting cold no longer be.
This friendless dead of night,
fear sounds its voice at me.
Tomorrow’s light anticipates a worthless life,
the stars and moon have seen.
They’ve witnessed all his power,
while luminescence makes its way,
for humble words you must ask,
your troubles soon to lay.

About this poem
This poem communicates the loneliness one feels when he has lost everything except the connection he has with himself, alone on earth while standing in the dark, and his creator who lives among the stars and Universe. It is about a feeling of worthlessness and a hope for something bigger and better; an affirmation that it is worth hanging on to life - an assurance from his God, who is the only friend he has left.
