The Man who could fix anything
The Man Who Could Fix Anything!
By Matt Elworthy;
The Man who could fix anything, a man of few words.
Not a word could be said, yet the man would be heard.
Wisdom and strength would ooze from his mind.
A giant of a man, yet gentle and kind.
A man so brave, a man so tall.
A man so ingenious, the man had it all.
A man of adventure, a man of the sea.
But a man who loved his chair, and a warm cup of tea.
How the chair sits alone, how the chair sits empty.
Memories were made, memories aplenty.
The workshop he grew over years,
over time.
The man could fix anything,
the man was sublime.
Sleepover nights I could not wait to be taken.
The man loved his ice cream and a sandwich of bacon.
His green diesel Rover would splutter and stop.
And excited we’d head to the chippy and video shop.
My sister and I would spend hours choosing.
By the end of the film the man would be snoozing.
We would go to United and cheer as they would defend.
My sister and I introduced him to Friends...
How he would laugh, and those memories are mine.
The moment it started on a Friday at 9.
The Man who could fix anything, be it a door or a cart.
The man just had everything,
a kind loving heart.
To London and Scotland we followed his son.
The man watched the marathon, the man watched him run.
Adored by his family, the man left us early.
The man who could fix anything,
that man loved his Shirley.
A man of few words, a man who has left us feeling sad.
The man who could fix anything,
I proudly say, was my Grandad.
The man who could fix anything,
He went with a fight.
So goodbye my Grandad,
Goodbye and goodnight.
About this poem
This poem was written around 48 hours after my Grandad passed away in February 2022, It initially started as a few words to post on social media but quickly progressed into a poem as I let my emotion take over for the first time. This is the first poem I have ever written and it was so unintentional but captured my Grandad perfectly in every sense. Men struggle to process and speak on their emotions and I was very insecure and unsure about publishing this, however after encouragement from my wife I have decided to share it. more »
