Solitary
Adjekawen A. Jeremiah 1998 (Delta State, Nigeria)
A silent war of loneliness,
In the battlefield of sadness;
Thinking of those at home,
Missing the love I own;
An island beyond the blue,
The land of the solitary crew;
Lost in the twaddle of language,
Roaming in’ freedom of bondage;
Heartless the warrior of steals,
Slashing it’s victims at heel;
Lynching the weakling it savage,
Wielding its blade in full rage;
Dreadful the wounds I feel,
Oh! Deeper than music can heal;
No comfort can mend my soul,
Maybe, at most, my soles;
Be kind to lighten my burden,
Enough my anguish to soften;
Rub not a lone bird of freedom,
Spare me the pangs of Sodom.
About this poem
Loneliness is worse than a physical battle especially when coupled with the feelings of sadness and nostalgia.
