Dreams

Michael K Love 1961 (Texas)

Do this, and don't do that,
Be this, and don't be that,
Work hard and stake your claim,
Try to make them all proud, and don't complain.

The days go by, then weeks and then years,
And you struggled through it all, the laughter and
the tears,
Never complaining about life's deal,
But never a dream quiet completely fulfilled.

Somewhere they all seemed to slip down the cracks,
Of all life's endeavors, and day to day crap,
Leaving a wonder of what may have been,
Had you taken a different road, way back when.

You don't want to lose what you already have,
And you wouldn't go back and change it, and you're not really even sad,
But still, there's those dreams that haunt you,
Each and every day, whispering in your ear,
Come on out and play.

About this poem

I awakened in the middle of the night on my 50th birthday and I guess I was just pondering my life, lost youth and my age at the time. I think a there are many people who can relate.

Been married to my "Beautiful and Wonderful" wife for 38 glorious years and we raised 2 boys. I try to always write about life and things that strike me as remarkable. My friends and family call me a storyteller. more…
