I Died this Morning
Duane Peterson 1964 (Minnesota)
I DIED THIS MORNING
I returned from working the night shift this morning.
It was cool, crisp and sunny. As I do every morning, I drive by my son and his family’s house
and honked, as if to say “good morning.” Thinking of their beautiful family and how blessed that we are only three blocks away from them.
I died this morning.
I returned home and was met at the door like I always was, by my beautiful wife. She was dressed for work. Her smile, blue eyes and blonde hair always caught my attention. She always kissed me and asked how my night was. As I told her, she listened intently. I always appreciated the 35-40 minutes we had with each other in the morning before she left for work.
I died this morning.
We kissed and hugged as she was leaving the house and we confirmed dinner plans for when she returned later in the day. I walked back into the house and like I always do, I turn down the lights and listen to music. The song that came on was Jealous of The Angels… it was so very beautiful. As I listened, I experienced a great deal of emotion flowing through my body.
I died this morning.
Living with pain all my life, I quickly wrote this off as a flare up, but as quickly as I wrote it off, it returned just as fast. I shut the music off. My emotions got the best of me, so I went to the bedroom that I always prayed in. My thoughts were precise. Thoughts, thanks and every smiling face of my wife, children and grandchildren zoomed through my mind. I went to my knees to praise God during this time of distress. I thanked Him for being my Father, sending Jesus to our rescue and leaving us with the Holy Spirit.
I died this morning.
I had no fear and no regrets of my life lived. I was overwhelmed with a peace, love and joy that I never experienced before. As I knelt before God, I heard music. I asked Him what was going on, not because I was concerned, but of my own curious nature. I thanked Him for everything, and I prayed for His will. I wrote this letter…and…I died this morning.
