The Gift
The Gift
Arose the Son with healing in His wings;
And thus, our Lord, first fruits of them that slept,
Erased beyond the grave the death that stings--
Rejoice, O world! Accept God's promise kept.
Give thanks for His begotten Child below,
Who lived in flesh and trod the thorny path
Of life's stark test beyond what we can know,
That man might gain the life the Father hath.
Christ's glory shines above the noon-day sun--
The prophets testify of this and more,
The way to heav'n He cleared; the work is done
That we and countless souls had waited for.
His sacrifice for us brings mercy sweet,
Which tempers justice at the judgement seat.
About this poem
I wanted to write an English sonnet about the Savior, Jesus Christ. It was a challenge to stay true to the gospel doctrine I believe and, as well, fit it into this format: 14 lines, each one with iambic pentameter, and with its typical rhyme scheme, including a rhyming couplet at end.
