Drowning
The worst part about drowning is that you see the life you are losing
As you sink deeper down towards a future promising death
They say salt water can heal scars and bruising
But most people forget that it can claim your last breath
As the days go by, I am looking up at what is lost
My eyes burn as I see what I have become
Gasping for air, I fight the waters at all cost
But I know that giving in is what gets me home
Everyday is a step closer to the sand
Everyday the water chokes harder
I miss the control when I was on land
But I am stuck in the current that pushes me down farther
The world views the ocean as something that can heal
The bright, crystal water brings beauty, never pain
But the waves stab like knives and cause you not to feel
I’m drowning from the surface, the body I will never attain
Recovery is my ocean that forces me to drown
The lifeboat of control is no longer in reach
I am stuck in this hell, they are forcing me down
But one day again, I will be beach on the beach
About this poem
This poem was written with a broken heart and a lost soul- a mind captive by the chains of an eating disorder. The purpose of the poem is to educate those who do not understand the grip an eating disorder has on its prisoner. I am not promoting relapse but rather showing the power of our mind. Through hard work and strength from God, my mind has changed as I now transparently see that the water is beautiful- just like recovery.
