Yellow Ribbon
Highland Trickster 1987 (North Carolina)
We used to stand for the flag.
That red, white, and blue.
When you saw Ol’ Glory waving.
We all knew just what to do.
There they use to march.
In our hometown parades.
Servicemen of all ages.
We all screamed our hooray’s.
We love to see them out.
Dressed in their clean dress blues.
But what we don’t like so clearly.
Is seeing the ones that paid their dues.
Arms tore off their bodies.
Legs removed by mines.
Some left faceless or scarred.
Here you are checking if this still rhymes.
Some joined for the money.
Some joined for the glory.
Some joined to serve their country.
But you’ll never listen to their story.
Toy soldiers is all we want.
Polished and on the march.
“I support the troops.”
We do more than just stand watch.
Love the sinner and not the sin.
But what if we have a war to win.
Our kids have killed kids.
We just toss those back in the toy bin.
How can you support the troops.
That learn to scream and roar.
When next to that yellow ribbon.
Your peace sign says no war.
About this poem
I wrote this poem as a reflection of why some veterans don't feel what they thought they would after serving. Many try to act like they support the troops and are on their side, but vilify everything that they do.
