The day was like no other

Dale Evern 1963 (Anchorage)

The day was like no other

I had no idea when I said goodbye
It would be forever
You seemed so calm
When I asked you how you felt
And you said: “I got da Covid.”

For some reason, I told you I loved you.
You responded with the same.

Your death sparked so many memories .
You and your friends getting me drunk for the first time on a dare, us getting drunk on your wedding day with a bottle of 1800, and thirty years later, we drank a bottle of vodka on the Kobuk River.

You and I hunted together, but you were never a true hunter.  I never told anyone you cried every time you ever killed an animal. I was always just thankful we could feed our families.

I miss you every day.  You think I was the one you looked up to, but that’s not true.  You stood against the establishment and built your own business.  I always worked within the societal boundaries and got ahead.

You are the third of six siblings I’ve lost. And you were the one that was supposed to last forever.

Damn you, brother.  Your laugh, your smile, your kindness will be with me forever.

You caused the day that was like no other.

Dale
