When child becomes parent
Even just for a while
Tears may fill the eyes
Camouflaging the smile
Seeing a parent transformed
Into an infantile state
Presses hard on the nerves
Evokes a possible future fate
This was the strength
In your life long ago
This was the steadfast given
Didn’t we all think so?
But time sometimes acts
As a great wrecking ball
Taking a strong human spirit
And making it fall
So life comes full circle
And the child provides care
As they loved you back then
Love you give back albeit with fear
No words need be spoken
How deeply they do appreciate
The time and support given
Aware of the turmoil piling up on their plate
For the pain of parent becoming the child
Is never an end of life goal
Their mind, heart and soul hurting
Wishing their lives remained healthy and whole
But just as they unconditionally loved
When helpless in this world were we
Back that love must be given
Just as unconditionally
About this poem
When elderly parents become ill, sometimes roles with children are reversed.
