Dialogue
Dialogue
A dark day, rain is coming,
The chill in the air and gusty breeze
Stirs the bare limbs of trees,
Sets them waving like skeletal arms
In some desperate motion
That strikes a mood, a feeling
Of portentous concern,
A building pressure of
Expectation and wonder.
And then it passes, this state of mind,
This stream of consciousness,
Consciousness of uncertainty,
Of caring what happens next,
As if that mattered a great deal,
But in its place is not peace
Nor understanding nor decision
To take a different path
To a new outlook or vision,
Something that gives life
Meaning and direction,
For that doesn’t seem possible
At this point in time where
All I know is not enough,
Is never enough to end the doubt.
And here comes the rain,
A cold driving downpour
That seems as if the clouds
Have opened and let go
All at once in a torrent,
And somehow that means
Something like what is
Hinted at in dreams,
An image, a narrative
Leading somewhere dim and
Distant like the stars, like
The goals I once had and
Cherished, the ones that
Seemed so right and reachable,
Until they weren’t and will never be,
Or so it seems.
About this poem
I like the idea of "participation mystique," of connecting the inner and the outer worlds. In this case, something like the weather can reflect or reveal states of mind, can inspire thoughts and emotions not otherwise apparent.
