My Cat

When all is said and all is done
I always turn to that furry one
Who's been with me through all the years
Of lonely nights and unshod tears.

He's getting old and feeble now
I should say good-bye, but I don't know how
To look into his trusting eyes...
I just don't think I know how.

Sometimes I see the kitten inside
Chasing shadows; without any pride
He's always provided a meal for me
A mouse in exchange for his monthly food fee

Last night I shooed him off my lap
I was busy with life, and needed a nap
I'll never forget that look in his eyes
A mixture of love with a bit of surprise

Please don't ever shoo away
The love that's given, day after day
When your arms are empty...what's left in your lap
Is a heart full of sorrow and more need for a nap.

Now I lay him down to sleep
But that look in his eyes, I'll always keep
To remind me to never, shoo away
A love that is given, day after day.

Sometimes the words flow like a murder of crows. They've held my secrets for the past 65-years. And sometimes they repeat them back to me, and laugh. more…

After reading this, I should have devoted another stanza, to 'Tell Me Why I Shouldn’t Cry'.

A close friend of mine had to put down her beloved dog. I feel her pain. I have been there. I was asked when the time came how I could be there for the final trip. I said 'How could I not?' We need to be with them til their final breath. They deserve it! They will depart knowing they were loved.

I pinned this one and read it twice. :)

    P.S.
If people ask me what's the hardest part of having a pet? I would answer right away by saying - it's the goodbye.

Congratulation! I actually voted for you. This poem made me cry and focus on pure love for my dog who just turned 14. I will never snap at him again.Hes all I have since my husband passed and the kids are over200 miles away. Thank you!

Thank you for this. When my old dog (15) was about to 'pass' I had a hard time feeling patient. I regret not having the empathy to just follow her through the process and being a little more tolerant of the new issues she was facing. I think she helped me prepare for this a little. Still not enough.

So, is this the one you doubted? I assume so and yet people relate and so here you are as well showing. Well done, Miss Thang.

I chose it because it's written good and I like what it's about and the perspective.
