Saved
Samantha McElroy 2005 (New York)
I close my eyes
Breathe in, out…
Don’t think about it.
I fling around, running fast.
Pumping hard, nearer, nearer.
I leap off the cliff into open air.
I drop, falling fast, wind all about.
Never have I moved so fast.
I can’t suck in air, can’t open my eyes.
Can’t scream.
The water comes crashing up to me.
I hit hard, breaking ribs, sloshing about.
I gasp for air, churning the relentless force
that is constantly trying to steal my life.
I grip onto life, not ready to hand it over to the wet stranger.
I look about, but all there is is water.
Hungry waves slosh me to the rocks, cornering me.
I’m nearing the end of my fight against the greedy liquid.
I spin and grip the rock, as dear to me as a child.
It senses my grasp and pushes harder, threatening to smash me to bits.
A hand grabs mine, and pulls me onto the rock, strong and steady.
Such a force, a feeling of complete safety washes over me,
more powerful than the ocean itself.
I turn, bleary eyed to my rescuer, but there is no one there.
He has returned to Heaven.
About this poem
It's a religious poem of sorts, the ocean represents the pull of temptation and sin.
