The Bee

The Bee

I never thought something I love could turn out to be
the one thing that could kill me

I’m not afraid
           I’m heartbroken

heartbroken of the thought that I should be afraid
the constant reminder on my hip that it’s important to keep my distance

how do I distance myself from something I love so much? to be asked to disconnect w something that makes me feel so connected.

I don’t fear bees
( I fear the need to be fearful)

I didn’t die
but the bee did
to protect his family from something he feared

(I was what he feared)

I didn’t die
but it feels like a part of me did

but then again….

when you feel your life slipping
you find yourself gripping,
to hold on tight to what matters most

I can learn from the bee-

to protect those you love most

I SURVIVED

I don’t fear bees

Nature is my home

About this poem

I design and install gardens on Nantucket island, my passion being pollinator gardens. At the end of August I nearly lost my life from a bee sting on my pinkie finger while working on a clients property. I drove myself to the hospital and was one minute from not surviving. The poem below is what I wrote while recovering in my hospital bed.

Laura Davison

I grew up out in the country in California and after graduating from college I moved to Nantucket to pursue my career in Landscape Design. I have 2 children and am continuing to work designing and installing pollinator gardens although I am deathly allergic to bees. I carry two episodes pens with me wherever I go and go for immunotherapy treatment twice a week. more…
