Face 2 Face

Staring in the mirror just me and you
You and me
For so long it’s been me and them
Everybody, no autonomy
No difference. Between. Fiction and reality
What they write becomes me
But not now, I’m face to face with
Myself - oh
Myself - oh
Myseh - eh -ey - ey - elf
Myseh - eh -ey - ey - elf

I’m tomorrow’s news,
But yesterday’s child
Unevolved for this new age
Unevolved for this new age
Tomorrow’s news,
But yesterday’s child
Unevolved for this new ay - age.

Same act same face same style
I never get to be
Or grow for a while
It’s an academic jail cell
Holding. Me hostage.
Passin’ the bars will only deepen my bondage
And that’s why, yeah, I’m face to face
With myself - oh
Myself - oh
Myseh - eh -ey - ey - elf
Myseh - eh -ey - ey - elf

I’m tomorrow’s news,
But yesterday’s child
Unevolved for this new age
Unevolved for this new age
Tomorrow’s news,
But yesterday’s child
Unevolved for this new ay - age.

About this poem

Part one of NFC's concept album "No Name" is about the lack of ownership the character feels with regards to their own life. They've never had much of a say; there were always authority figures, be it parents, teachers, coaches etc telling them how, when, where, why until one day it hits them that the only person that knows their true desires and needs is themself. They feel they've sort of been left behind; while these figures in their life may have pushed them to a certain level of success in the moment, this character feels they don't have the tools to continue growing and adapting once these ever present, all knowing figures discard them in favor of the next kid to come down the assembly line. Without people to tell them who they are, the only existence they knew shatters, leaving the character vulnerable and unsure how to move forward with only themselves to rely on.
