Dell
In the mountains of Virginia
in late spring, I saw the vision of a wing--
diaphanous and dear, heart's hallelujah
drifting clear from the summit, to bring
my soul to the current moment
of curve, dell, and bower;
to persuade away past lament--
reveal through scrim, a light shafted flower.
Oh, sudden prism, single eye!
Hued air, you penetrate the stones,
rent resistance and shatter the lie,
that grief is sown to the bone.
I stretch my heart in this new air.
I will, I breathe, I dare.
