Analysis of Painted Pebble

Painted pebble in my hand
From unknown location once destined for sand
Saved from the toil of wind, rain and storms
Taken in for no other reason than to be adorned
Worn, marked and scarred from your journey to date
You are about to be revealed as something so great

With single-handed patience, struggle and grit
The artist works wonders on every last bit
Colourful, beautiful, vivid and bright
You’re never giving away your struggles and fight
Solid and strong right to the core
A pretty piece of art to forever love, cherish and adore

You are our painted pebble, as we are to you
Worthy of love, it just takes an artists eye view
We danced round the sun but it ended too soon
Taken by waves that shaped us on a tide from the moon
All pebbles must turn to dust and return to the stars
One day we may meet again as pebbles on Mars

About this poem

This is a poem I wrote for my sisters funeral on 30th June 2021. Tricia had several life health setbacks from being born with a heart defect to suffering a massive stroke. She had to relearn how to speak and lost the use of her right arm. Having taken up art she painted beautifully colourful pebbles which after her early death at age 59 are now part of her lasting legacy. She had a humanist funeral and always dreamed of life on other planets. This poem captures many aspects of Tricia’s life, struggles, beliefs and talents.
