Analysis of My old friend

Nikki Lauder 1979 (Taumaranui)

A single tear drops.
And as I will it’s warmth to linger,
It turns cold.
“Should I sit, my old friend?”
I close my eyes and I can hear
Laughter of times past.
A smile emerges in the corner of my lips.
“Shall we talk, my old friend?”
Eyes glazed to the distance,
Words roll from my tongue,
Slipped from within protective walls.
“Shall we remember, my old friend?”
Memories flow, causing the heart to stir.
Remembering the energy and love
Unconditional and true.
“Shall I play, my old friend?”
Fingers, knowing and practiced,
Strum the instrument,
Playing the notes of our friendship.
“Shall we cry, my old friend?”
As we exist together, yet apart.
A friendship cut short.
But I will see you again.
“Shall we say goodbye, my old friend?”
The tear threatens again as we part.
I look back over my shoulder
That was once side by side.
“We shall not, my old friend, we shall not!”
