Analysis of Ode to Acceptance

Santino Maulucci 2000 (Buffalo)

I'd rather hold a broken heart than Eden and its walls.

I'd rather cry a thousand tears with your fails and falls.

I don't want your perfect best,

I don't need your flawlessness.

Let me see what no one else can see,

Step from out your pretend walls for me.

What comfort is it to stand outside in the snow and say

That you don't need the warmth of beating heart?

Others may be satisfied, but it is not okay.

Shed your ragged finery and step into my lines.

I see your shivering self, and I'm unashamed of mine

I care not for your faults and spots, your unbecoming parts.

Your painted smile is far sadder than your shattered state.

Your done up hair cannot compare to gnarled, wind-tossed braids.

Your whitened cheeks are dull and dead beside your blushing skin.

Instead of awkward shoes for show, go barefoot in caressing wind.

The years go by too fast to hold a broken picture ,

And make believe it's really true and sure.

Stop reciting rehearsed words and sing unbound.

Boxes are not houses. Voices ought to sound.

I'd rather hear your raspy notes than none at all,

Rather see you dance unchecked than any gaudy ball.

I'd rather hear your wild laughter ringing out,

See your tears and hear impassioned shout.

Feel your soul shamelessly embracing mine,

To accept how we were made, our great Design.

About this poem

I thought about the people I love and their many mistakes and flaws. There is a stark contrast between the idealistic beauty of love and the realistic everyday imperfection of people, and the way they blend is staggering to me.
