Analysis of One of Two

Richard Groff 1957 (Pottstown, Pa.)

You asked me for this and I said: I can’t do it.
But now here it is I hope you’ll see through it.
The things that you hold precious and dear,
Are the things that are spawning all of your fear.

Your money can’t buy you contentment.
And your lips won’t earn you rewards.
I did not come to bring peace to this world.
But instead I’ve brought you a sword.

I came to you as a servant, a servant of God Most High.
I healed your diseases and drove out your demons;
In return you condemned me to die.
And now while you party and rejoice in my death,
You send each other gifts because I’ve drawn my last breath.

Now what’s left to be done since you’ve killed Jesus’ prophets?
There’s just one thing for me, watch in fear, you can’t stop it.

You left my dead body lying out in the street,
For three and a half days in this sweltering heat.
You’re refusing me burial and denying me rest.
So, God’s breathing into me one final breath.

As I stand on my feet I’m called up into heaven.
Only half the time’s over, only half the last seven.
And now in your anguish you can weep, wail and mourn.
For your constant disobedience has only bought you His scorn.

You laughed at the judgment and the day of God’s wrath.
Now you’re mired in quicksand and stuck in your path.
Oh, how I wish the hearts of many had been changed.
But now, for all eternity, from God you’ve been estranged.
