Analysis of Jesus at the Wheel

Richard Groff 1957 (Pottstown, Pa.)

I’m still behind the wheel, but no longer am I driving.
If you ask me what it feels like here? I’ll say: I’m just surviving.
Surviving till I reach the end and I’ve run out of road.
But I am not afraid; I’m simply waiting to unload!

To get rid of all my baggage and walk through the open door,
Into the house prepared for me; the one that will be pure;
I’ll have no need of cleaning there because I’ll find no dirt.
No trouble, sorrow, death or woe; no longer any hurt!

How can I thank you Jesus? You grabbed the wheel just in time!
You pressed on the accelerator; now I speak in rhyme.
Every time that I have shared what You have given. You give more.
I feel just like a child again, inside a candy store!

Each taste another sweet reminder of Your love and grace,
And then after the final bite, I’ll get to see Your face.
Not like the pictures drawn by men, with blue eyes and long hair,
But scarred and bruised and beaten as I meet You in the air!
