Analysis of Song to the Seagulls
Michael Drewes 1944 (Herzhausen)
So let me rest and rot in peace,
for nothing else is there to do.
I am no longer in one piece,
Shattered, strewn with no ado.
I am not the humans' glory,
nor the straight and steadfast rock,
not the singer's brilliant story,
nor the crowing morning cock.
Storms and seas, they have me tossed
to shores and coasts so far away.
Amid the ocean am I lost,
with no shelter where to stay.
All my life, I had it had.
There is nothing more I wish.
There is no reason to be sad,
because it' s over in a switch.
Crown and sceptre, they are gone,
and with them, all the cloth of honour.
There is nothing to be done,
Not even by the maids of honour.
Come, ye seagulls, lead me out
to the ocean's stormy width,
and fly in yonder height about,
and tell them that I was a myth.
Oh, ye seagulls, lead me out astray
from this world into your realm away!
Carry you my soul with thee
gliding, oh, so full of glee,
in your morning flights.
