Analysis of Sonnet XV

Benjamin Brantley 1984 (Winston-Salem, North Carolina)

Shouldest a knight adventure on a quest
For love and immortality alike,
To find within the heart of a princess,
The rare hidden treasures of her psyche?

Shouldest he pledge his love by bearing arms;
Laying down his life in the very course,
To be with her...(assuaging worldly charms)
In marriage which none other may divorce?

Shouldest the very least of knights gain heart
By truth told in each chanson minstrel’s tale,
Which by the song of them does there impart,
Courage to face one’s foe, and to assail?

The matter of his hopeful blessed end,
Shouldst from poetic novelty, transcend.
