Analysis of En justice de paix

Maurice Rollinat 1846 (Châteauroux) – 1903 (Ivry-sur-Seine)

Le vieux, contre la fenêtre,
Fauve, en train de ruminer,
Soudain s’entend condamner
Au profit de ses trois maîtres.

Il semble alors que son œil lent,
Ayant défalqué l’assistance,
Demande au grand Christ du mur blanc
Ce qu’il pense de la sentence.

Et quand le juge lui dit, froid :
« Qu’avez-vous à répondre ? — Moi !
— Grince le vieux, pâle, et qui tremble,

J’ n’ai rien à vous répondr’ du tout
Si c’ n’est qu’ vous êt’ quat’ chiens ensemble
Pour manger un malheureux loup !
