Analysis of Evolution

You poor, deluded innocents!  Have you no self-respect?
To hear you bawling of your love, that's what one would expect.
Four billion years before yourselves did planet Earth survive,
And still, with or without your help, for billions more yet thrive.

The countless stars you sing of, and the moon and planets, dance
In stately courses dictated by physics, not romance.
The songbirds flying overhead, the flowers on parade:
You should have learned about this from your parents, I'm afraid.

And love is just an instinct-driven method of detection,
That optimizes the gene pool by natural selection.
Your calling it by other names, this mutual attraction,
Can only serve to masquerade a chemical reaction.

And yet, my mind is open; I admit I may be wrong.
As chemical reactions go, this one is rather strong.
By any other name, nat'ral selection is as sweet
As she who settled by my side and made my life complete.
