When You Ask Her
When You Ask Her
When you ask her to tell her story, be patient if she cries. Try to understand the reason she’s built up her wall and created this disguise.
When you ask her to let you in, allow her to tell you about the heartache she’s endured, and the war she fights within.
When you ask her why she seems so sad, please try to remember she put on her best face just to make you glad.
When you ask her about her frustration and she replies “it’s nothing” understand that her exasperated sighs are hopes you’ll realize it’s something.
When you ask her if she’s okay, she’ll always reply “I’m fine” try to remember she’s never at peace with a storm inside her mind.
She’s a lot to handle, at times she’s a broken mess, but she’ll give you everything she has and take whatever’s left. So when you ask her to bare her soul, learn to read what she’s buried beneath. Because she’ll never reveal what she keeps hidden so deep.
About this poem
I write poetry that tells the story of what lies behind a woman’s smile. I am a mother and a wife, I also suffer from depression and anxiety. Living with brokenness and trying to care for a family can be debilitating. I am a fairly new writer but my hope is to reach women like me who even through the pain continue to fight and win but, also I want these women and others to also know that the fight doesn’t just mean masking the problem. We really have to focus on making sure the women in our lives our truly okay. more »
