Wicked Oppression
Richard Newton Sherrer 1951 (Easton)
Save me, the godly one is gone,
The faithful have also vanished;
From amongst the children at dawn,
And causing us to be anguished.
They utter lies to their neighbor,
With flattering lips and their tongue;
A double heart as they labor,
Speaking vanity that is flung.
May the Lord cut off flattered lips,
The tongue that does make a great boast;
For their mouth having pride that sips,
From the cup of an earthly host.
Who says that lips are our own,
With our tongue we will prevail;
For the master is overthrown,
Having no lament to bewail.
Because the poor have been plundered,
While the needy are groaning;
I continuously wondered,
Rise to help those who are moaning.
God will set them in the refuge,
In the comfort for which they long;
His Word like a raining deluge,
For drowning those who have done wrong.
Like silver couth in a furnace,
That is purified seven times;
Comforting of those in distress,
Punishing others for their crimes.
For the Lord shall be keeping them,
He will be guarding forever;
The defiant He will condemn,
By their own sword He will sever.
The wicked prowl on every side,
As vileness is exalted;
Knowledge of God they have denied,
As their transgressions defaulted.
