Where You Reside

I wish we could have thrived together,
The longing for a relationship; a guide through this life,
I wanted nothing more than someone who could tell me stories and kiss me goodnight.

Someone to let me know that the monsters under my bed were only imaginary,
I was taken by surprise that I was kin to my own fear; a thief who robbed me as a child.
Blinded I was to believe such actions would suffice as good,
Blinded I was to be taught that you were doing the best that you could.

What’s so alluring of that poison to where you forgot to play and laugh?
You forget what you have in your own grasp,
Looking back into your own eyes only to ignore what you lack.

I wasn’t meant to be here,
I was thought of as a burden,
no; I was supposed to be a cure for something you could never shake,
You forgot your role in this life & facing that you could never take.

We tried so hard for you, risked our sanity, our pride.
Nothing was enough to make you forget that lifestyle that tucked you in at night.
The drag of that cigarette makes you feel whole but yet empty,
I hope in the midst of sleep you realize you’ve always lacked empathy.

About this poem

The poem is in relation to my mom who had an abusive drug addiction ever since I could remember as a child. A child should never bear the weight of an adults poor decisions.
