the strength of my dark

the flame ceases when i walk into the light.
cowering away,
succumbing to the realness
of how insignificant it really is
in comparison to the abundance of light this beautiful world provides.

we see darkness as the failure of light,
but why should the absence
of such wonder
be termed a failure?

seeing
is not the same as perceiving
because perception
only matters to its sole perceiver
just as
failure
is not the same as progress
because progression
only matters to its sole progressor.

darkness is not the failure of light,
darkness is the perception of progression.

so as this flame belittles itself
disappearing from my sight
i decide to run back
sprinting, breathing,
feeling everything as i tread dirt.
run back to the darkness
the place always thought of as
somber
tragic
dreadful
when in reality, the dark is quite simply
light waiting to gain its strength back.
to explore the depths in which
it has hidden from itself for far too long.

About this poem

This poem was written late at night when I needed to find a way to express myself. It is about darkness and light, but the deeper meaning is of our insecurities and breakthrough. March, 2022
