Death Brings Renewal
Scott Michael Potter 1966 (Grand Rapids, MI)
A death drive seeks renewal…
What happens in-between?
The in-between is the import:
to individuate is of utmost importance!
One cannot focus entirely upon New
or else Death and Renewal are given short shrift!
Yet to focus on Death or Renewal, or both,
is to neglect Now….
We must live in the Now
with a keen eye also envisioning Renewal/Death,
which leads back to what makes
Now important…
Now gains in importance through Encounter,
as do Death and Renewal,
yet one must also consider Image
and the importance of Imagination
as concerning meaning.
Meaning and Value in life show what Now can be…
but, without a reference of Culture or Surround,
the Now becomes an Echo.
So, we must determine
what Image and Imagination mean
to us and our lives,
in order to express Now
as fully as possible!
About this poem
The power of image and imagination are mostly lost in our current day; lost to the power of image subverted in advertising, to the power of sex sells being truly overworked from its beginning early Freud-advice-offered advertisements of major corporations. Still Image and imagination, especially as touted by James Hillman and David Miller, following some of C.G. Jung's wisdom and certainly Joseph Campbell's many explorations presented in scholarly and secular interviews, both retain great power and can in their fullest senses aid in the grieving processes. more »
