Realities of Wealth
Richard Newton Sherrer 1951 (Easton)
There is a grievous evil,
I have seen under the sun;
Riches kept by the devil,
On what the owner had done.
Riches lost a bad venture,
Having nothing in his hand;
While on an adventure,
And sinking in some quicksand.
He came out of his mother,
From the womb naked came he;
Takes nothing from another,
Toil from his hand to see.
This is a grievous evil,
Just as he came, he shall go;
Toils of wind is carnal,
Gaining nothing from the flow.
His days eaten in darkness,
In vexation and anger;
Buying clothes for his starkness,
As his sickness does linger.
What have he seen to be good,
Fitting is to eat and drink;
Pleasing toil as he should,
What God gave for him to think.
All to whom that God gave wealth,
Possessions that he might love;
More importantly his health,
That is enhanced from above.
For this is a gift from God,
He will not much remember;
The days of his life to laud,
The joy of a lit ember.
