Woman
I am woman,
And because I am a woman,
I needed to watch what I wore
They had already dictated my wardrobe
Stripped me and clothed me as they saw fit
That decision was never mine to make
Taunting and Jeering if I tried switching the dynamics
Reducing me into a fearful woman
Cycling my paranoia to make other fearful women
But no, I would not cover my skin
I would not hide my beads
Because I am woman I would dress myself as I saw fit
Disregarding all your primitive principles and ideologies
Because I am woman I would love all of me
I am woman
And because I am woman
I needed to silence my needs
They had already decided that I was meant to be weak
My views and opinions falling deafly to their ears
I was meant to seem pointless, think less, Be less
Turning me into a doubtful woman
Subjecting generations to be other doubtful women
But no, I would not hold back my thoughts
I would not bite my tongue
Because I am woman I would be fearless
Brave enough to speak my truth and stand by it
Because I am woman, I would be nothing but a beast
Yet, I am woman
And because I am a woman
I needed to be submissive
They, (laughs) they, had already determined that I was supposed to be fragile
To be dependant, constantly searching for my prince
I did not have the strength to move mountains
imposing to dictating that I needed their constant validation
Secluding me to be a needy woman
Conditioning this to make other doubtful women
But no, I would not dim my flame
I would not step back
Because I am a woman I would be stronger
Capable of achieving anything I put my mind to
Because I am a woman, I would survive
I am woman
And because I am a woman
I needed to be submissive
They had concluded that my life would never been mine but theirs
The concept of freedom and free will had always been so surreal
I needed to live for them,
mind, body and soul
Blasting out all my impurities and imperfections
I needed to be desirable otherwise no man would want me
Building me into a bashful woman
Repeating this to create other bashful women
But no, I would not live for them
I would not lower my standards to fit into their little suffocating box
No, Because I am a woman I would be
About this poem
it is about the struggles and expectations that come with being a woman and having the strength to break those expectations and just be free.
