Malaria bullied me
Emmanuel Odoi-Anim 1993 (Accra)
A vampire bit me;
almost took me to the cemetery.
Goblin-like little insects.
Thank goodness! they have no teeth;
Though their proboscis suck great effects.
They announce with a song their threat.
Most sleeps ruined by their demonic beats.
Many lives buried, last breaths of regret.
Many pits and gutters, tires and bushes.
Many filthy surroundings, homes and places.
No nets, no repellants, no insecticides.
Few drugs, few clean ups.
Less education, less hygiene.
Many careless nights, many careful bites.
Many reflex strikes, many misses.
My spirit is disturbed;
And my blood is enslaved.
My nerves are in bondage.
My body breaks down.
My bowels are somewhat rapid.
My bones and joints have ferocious shivers;
As if it were the coldest ice age night.
So my lips quiver; but boil hot with temperature.
Strange! Hot and cold from an insect.
Food is tasteless. I, meatless.
Minister, Barrister, Carpenter; they died.
Man, woman, child, died.
Good, bad, not so bad, died.
Malaria buried them.
I live, but have a scar in my memory,
Malaria bullied me!
