Shadow Self

A shadow creeps below the water
Lurking beneath the surface
Unseen, unheard, and unmatched
I know what it is.
I’ve seen it.
I’ve heard it.
I am no match for it.
Our relationship is older than most.
Remaining my most stable aspect,
It speaks to me.
I listen to its gentle whisper.
It tells me everything is fine.
It helps me cope.
This creature has but one secret.
I fail to remember it.
It’s killing me.
