They Buried Him in the Rain”

Carl Monty 1958 (Hartford)

They buried him
In the rain
No one came

A cold and grey
Wet winters day
Three people stood silent
Somewhere searching
For the right words to say

His final resting place
A machine dug hole
Covered by a tarp
On a pale thin pole
Someone’s tears
Caress their face
While someone else
Somewhere said grace

Dressed in black
Preacher man read
No one to listen
Save for the dead
Words traveled like smoke
Up to the sky
Forgotten again
Alone he must die

They buried him
In the rain
No one came

About this poem

Passing by an old white church in the idyllic countryside near home the other day, I noticed a gravesite that had just been prepared for some departed soul. It was raining, cold and raw. A sense of overwhelming melancholy set over me for some reason, and thought how terribly sad it would be if no one came to pay their respects because of the weather or just sheer indifference. So I wrote this short poem.
