To Love Is...

To love is, first of all, to give away for free
To love means, like a rapid river run
And like the spring's exciting over-brimming glee
You grant your heart to your beloved one!

To love is to be lying barely awake
And with the early dawn, be thinking hard:
What you can grant today, what sacrifice to make
For those you deeply love with all your heart

To love is to be caught in endless ardent fights
For faithfulness in every gaze and word
To keep two loving hearts forever side by side
In joy and sorrow, close forevermore!

Is love waiting? Of course, it is; let's have no doubt!
For tenderness and warmth, but it refrains
From silly calculations that will tell about
How much it spends, how much it has to gain

Love's not a piggy bank that closet's darkness holds
Her joyous song shall never be confined
To be in love is to respond with inner shine
To all the good you witness in the world!

To love is noticing what doesn't seem a lot
To sense a kindred soul that's always near:
Here's a book - has he read it yet, or has he not?
A pear... What does he like about this pear?

A trifle? Are you sure? What makes it such and why?
Sometimes a drop saves lives from being wrecked
Love is the cherry banner we have lifted high
In happiness, no trifle we neglect!

Love's not the constant passion's firework at play
Love is a faithful hand that's always near
Love doesn't fear the darkest of the darkest days
And no temptation it will ever fear!

To love is when the truth is guarded at all cost
When you're to fight the universe alone
To love is to forgive when everything is lost
Except, of course, for being cheated on

To love is when you always overpower
And face with pride whatever is thrown by fate
But never in the final of your hours
Accept when someone's trying to degrade

Love's not a merry, bright, yet useless festive bow
Nor a rebuke that stabs you from behind
Love is a lavish gift our Maker can endow
Perhaps the only one that's truly kind

For all these little talks, I feel so little pity
Like water in the sand, it will be gone
Our passions are deplorable and fleeting
Love, like the sun, is set for shining on!

About their cynic laughter, I can't care any less
For they will never see the stars above
As only humble hearts, my poem will address
Who's able to have faith and truly love!

About this poem

"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails." (1 Cor. 13:4-8)
