What is a Heart?

What is a heart?
If I rip your chest open
Will it be there?
If I slice your skull
Can I touch it?
Or is it born
At the intersection
Of affection?
At the crossfire
Of emotions?
Can I sense it
In isolation?

"A heart is born
In the electricized
Touch of empathy_
When I care
And you care.
At times it's unrequitedly blue,
Times it's reciprocally red.
Be it selflessly dissolving,
Or selfishly rolling,
A heart is born in the flow
And undertow of compassion"

And I can feel a heart,
Not yours and not mine,
Inside your warm palm
As you reach and I grasp.
I can touch it,
I can feel it,
It is our heart.

About this poem

I wrote this poem in the recuperation from a period of disillusionment that devastated me and made me revalue a lot of my beliefs and life choices. The poem was inspired after a brief encounter I had with an amazing person whom I revere immensely. I hope you enjoy it.
