Wished away
When the snow came, they wished the sun melt it away.
When it shone too bright, they prayed for a cloudy day.
When the gardens hindered growth, they prayed it rained.
And when too much came, they wished for a time when there were neither clouds nor rain, for a sun that would come but not heat too much, for a breeze that would blow but not too cold.
They wished, and they prayed.
But they didn't smell the flowers when they came,
stayed inside when it rained,
didn't go out when the sun shone down,
and didn't stomp around when snow covered the ground.
They missed all the time that they'd wished for what wasn't.
And when the day turned to night and the night turned to day.
They wished for all the days they'd wished away.
About this poem
This poem is an ode to gratitude. While watching/listening to those around me complain about what isn’t instead of basking in the now, in understanding that every moment has its season and in each season there is a limit.
