The mask

The mask

I wear this mask of glitter and gold
It hides the ugliness that I hold
This mask of mine shimmers and smiles
But unseen tears are never far behind
To show the real me, I would have to remove this mask
But it's my protection from the past
If I remove the glitter and gold that keeps me safe
Will I find a happy place

Memories seep through, burning my heart
All my emotions ripped apart
My heart so sad and broken
I gave into my sorrow that's never spoken
This mask of mine keeps me safe
Never let it reveal my face

Because I was forgotten, left in the darkness
Sadness and pain are beautiful to me
Loneliness my friend you see
I cried alone
I bled alone
I hurt alone
I died alone

Maybe I need to keep this mask a little longer
Just until I'm feeling stronger
Maybe then I can be revealed
But only when I'm fully healed
But when this mask of mine is gone
What will lie behind, will I be strong
