The Sister of Doubt
Demondré Pieterse 2005 (Worcester)
Yesterday my ego reached its own conclusion.
Tonight Doubt made herself at home.
I lit a candle by the side of her bed,
kissed her goodnight to remind myself
of my mother's lips.
The rain warms my nightmares.
My dreams are scared to have me.
Midnight condescends to live me.
The dawn pretends to smile at me.
Doubt is fast asleep.
Horus sits at a lonely bar.
Rah waits at the door.
Sleepless are their eyes.
I shine in the corner.
Codependency unearths a sigh.
I should probably leave the room now.
Silence is much too loud for Doubt.
Her mother, my wife, Departure
stands in the doorway.
Awaiting my filthy poverty lips.
We then make love on the kitchen sink.
I lift her legs and undress her abdomen.
Bite the bra loose, lick the nipple.
Insert my sex, wrestle myself inside her.
Nine months pass, Confidence is born.
About this poem
The Sister of Doubt is me, who broke up with my first love months ago, struggling with doubt and seeking comfort in warm memories of my mother. I battle with my nightmares and feelings of inferiority represented by the gods Horus and Rah. Doubt eventually falls asleep, allowing me to reflect on codependency and eventual encounter with Departure, who represents something that's always been by my side. The poem ends with me and Departure's intimate moment giving birth to Confidence, the sister of Doubt. more »
