I Never Was

Claire Miller 1962 (Pittsburgh)

I never lived
I was not born
No one will care
No one will mourn

I’m not alive
I am not here
You will not find me
Anywhere

I’m not out there
I will never be
Please do not try
To look for me

I am the air
I am the light
I am a breeze
That cools the night

All around
As life abounds
You’ll hear my voice
In nature’s sounds

I am a force
I touch all things
And then I’m gone
On mem’ries wings

About this poem

In my 20s, I was very much in love with a young man from another country. We used to talk about a child, a girl, that we would have. We imagined what she’d look like, her name, and all the things a couple thinks about for their future child. Unfortunately, we did not stay together and this child “never was.” Not long ago, I was awake in the middle of the night and I remembered “our” child and suddenly, I heard her say “I Never Was…” This poem is about this child who never was….
