The Deep
I don my suit and other paraphernalia and plunge
down into the deep, exploring like a veteran shark or Shortraker.
On and on I steer, lazily gliding over waving bushes
that greet me with bouquets of floral designs unseen in any other realm.
Billions of tiny, colourful zooxanthellae plague my plight and pathway to my destination –
their most magnificent array of wild hues stunning my senses and teasing me to stay a while longer – but tarry I must not!
Crawling over crabs that claw and clasp at my suit and then ignite into a myriad of flickering sparks – all rocking to the tune of the tide – heighten my appreciation of the wonders of this world – only I am privileged at this exact moment to witness and enjoy.
Turning around I bump into a string of pearls that take my breath away, bubbling in my wake, awakening my realisation that I am alive. These bubbles are my life!
Alive I am, but at this depth deprived of life’s comforts.
This callous, clasping cold now cruelly biting into my flesh and bones, suggests my time is up.
Return I must – to my world – to my life – to me!
About this poem
I wrote this poem one Sunday when a Mexican fisherman spotted and then speared a 200-year-old shortraker. So sad! On Christmas Day each year, my greatest joy is to go down deep and explore the wonders of the ocean. Whilst the world feasts, I feast my senses on the smorgasbord in the ocean.
