Knowing you more than I know me

Why should I let you into my life

Knowing you will enter it with dirty shoes and without knocking

Knowing you will take off your coat and throw it on the chair in the corner

Knowing you will explore and poke and prod in place that don't concern you

Knowing that you will come in like a handyman or tourist and that either way it is no good because both of them leave eventually

Knowing that you will come with a broom and dust pan

That you will sweep all the negative thoughts away and dust the rugs filled with anxiety

Knowing that you will come with flowers and movies and my favorite snacks

That you will come with paint and furniture and give everything a makeover

Knowing that you will upholster the chairs, I spent my whole life laying on

That you will paint the walls, I've scratched the wallpaper off of

That you will change the sheets almost as if you are undressing me of my depression

Knowing that you will wipe the food off the corner of my mouth

That you will kiss my forehead and hold me like you are holding me together

Knowing that you will love me

and knowing that you will leave me

About this poem

It is about the inescapable dread you face after realizing that your new relationship will be short lived because you fell in love with your ex in a different body
