WASTED

he spent his time
praying to a god
who won't listen
calling a line
that won't answer
singing a song
he didn't write
and
reading a book
he doesn't even like

what else was there to do?

he had to pray and
he had to call her and
he had to read his book and
he had to sing until he couldn't anymore
until his throat was
sore
until it was torn
by the musical notes
that he used to pray to the god that didn't listen
and to
call that line, even though she still won't answer
and to
read that book

but over time
his throat would heal
and he'd finish his book
and pick up another
and tear the same lyrics through his lips

and still have time to pray again

About this poem

this poem is about the pit in your stomach as you do things that you know you shouldn’t be doing. when you have other things that you need to do, but you just can’t get yourself to stop and do them. doing things to desperately fill the space because you can’t just sit there and stare. you don’t enjoy the things you used to do so you try to do something new instead.
