Blanket of White

Lilah Ainsworth 2007 (Kent)

Written when it snowed here in the UK!

Blanket of white:

A blanket of white has enveloped the land
Almost as if some giant hand
Had dropped it here, upon the sand

There are flurries of snowflakes, here and there
The sea is cold, but there’s no ice where
By all right, there ought to have been
Maybe there is, it just hasn’t been seen

The birds have stopped their incessant cawing
Above the heads of the snowmen, instead drawing
Lines with pointed wing-tips in the sky
Oh, how it would be, to fly.

The storm has deepened, it’s coming faster
We aren’t meant to have natural disasters
And yet the wind is whistling higher and higher
The trees, bent over, call for cease-fire

One inch to one foot to two feet to three,
The snow whips higher, on some heavenly decree
Highest snowfall in years, and then decades
What you might see of outside fades.

There are no more birds screeching their pleas
This snow has taken many days to seize
The country, covered in a blanket of white,
The snow stops falling, at one point in the night

The snow has stopped! They sing and they cry
For the snow has ended. They wish it goodbye
It melts and sludges and runs in rivers
As you step outside, you’re still racked with shivers

But it’s gone for now, the snow has melted
It’s cold, and it’s wet, and for days it had pelted
The roofs of houses and you had to take care
But it's all over now, like some horrible nightmare
