Lunch
The green okra slime on our gumbo was
Just as it should be
With oil and crushed sassafras
Covering neatly across
The field of roux.
We're doing OK, he said,
Same old thing--kids, cars, work, and more
Work, just fine.
We're not doing OK she said--
Clipping the trees, going under, drowning.
We stirred the sherry into the bowl--
The sheen split,
Revealing aroma of crab,
Clawing its way to the top,
Scattering the leaves.
