Cold War

Benson Chukwueke 1971 (Owerri)

Now no exchange of gunfire
No bombshell razed the forest
All is quite and calm in the land
So quite as dead night
When we wrestle with heavyweight
In a fight to overcome our fears
A battle, largely unseen pains in our hearts
Only in the wrinkles on our faces
As we struggle to survive

The Price paid to the deep state
Locusts ambushed our farmland
And pollute the river stream
As Cholera break out in the air
Kwashiorkor kill our children in cold blood
The outcry echoes in the silent night
Of the cold war in our country

About this poem

There are wars going on in several places across the world. Some are hardly seen, because they are not wars where guns and bombs are fired, rather economic missiles and biological weapons are employed to cause food storage and environmental pollutions. So much hardship, especially with children mal- nourishment that result to several millions of deaths around the world.

Owerri, Nigeria since 1971. This is how I process and express my innermost cogitations; sitting back with pen and paper, painting words and polishing them until they become flowered verses. I guess for these actions, I could be called a poet or what do think? more…
