Welcome to Ukraine
The sun is out
but there is only darkness
it tries to find a crack
to let its presence be seen
a child cries
but no one hears him
the deafening noise has ceased
but ringing ears are screaming
where am I?
but no answers come to mind
how did i get here?
still no answers
suddenly my brain is showing pictures
a movie is being played
and I am in it
A child is crying again
this time with more urgency
I hear him but cannot move
i reach out to try and help him
but instantly retreat in pain
i try to look around
but the darkness laughs
my memory is slowly coming back
i remember cooking in the kitchen
i remember the sirens and people screaming
then.....i am buried alive
my hopes of being helped, are diminishing
minute by minute there are no sounds
i then realize the baby is mine
but the crying has stopped
and so has the movie
why LORD...oh why
About this poem
The events taking place in Ukraine have had quite an impact on me. I needed to express a day in the life of a Ukranian woman, on the verge of death, in complete hopelessness, as her baby dies.
